  • Afterwards, we'll likely walk to a nearby food joint for lunch.
  • Photo Gallery:
  • UtahJean's photos from the event.
  • And now a word from our sponsor: I had concerns because of 'THE' game today, but I think there were about 50 people that showed up this morning. I am to understand there were people from Idaho, Arizona, and Albuquerque. I think that's an amazing turn out. Much more than I expected.

The training itself went from about 10:30 to noon. A lot of information was covered in that hour and a half. More than a few people came up to me and said they had dabbled with GSAK a little and didn't really know it could do all of the things we discussed. In reality, the program can do a lot more than the basics we covered. It truly is an amazing program. For those with questions, feel free to contact me.. OR post your questions under the GSAK topic on the UTAG forum website.

There were a few cachers that couldn't make this event, and it was mentioned that, due the amazing growth of this hobby, we should offer another training in about six months. Two fellow cachers from the U of U offered their computer lab that has 25 computers and wireless access. Sounds like we have a place, we just need to schedule a time.

Many thanks to DeViDe for teaching, to GrandpaKim for his wealth of knowledge, and to Ross for the last minute projector. Many thanks to everyone that showed up ready and willing to learn.

  • And now a word from our sponsor: Thanks everyone for a great event! This really came together nicely with a huge turnout. I'm sure that the turnout was in part from the cachunuts, but that's just fine in my book.

A big thank you goes out to the Chuck-A-rama folks who let us stay an hour late - they're really patient and even got us a room to chat in when I realized we had ALOT more than originally expected.

In the meantime, the kids on the Angel Tree really will luck out - we had a trunk full of toys and gifts just for them, plenty of coins to trade (thanks Bill for dropping by with your delivery service) and also to everyone whom took the travel bugs home!

I'm hoping to do an event again sometime!

  • And now a word from our sponsor: Sure had a great time at this one, as always. SirGerald, thanks for some terrific activites, and of course thanks to the Cach-u-nuts for some wonderful puzzles and pins for the event. Thanks to everyone for coming, and for leaving the main site i n nearly spotless condition. Barely found any trash at all when we walked through it, and I don't think any of that was even ours. Weather was interesting, tho not a hindrance to anything, other than making a few people a little nervous. This even turned out every bit as well as I could have hoped, thanks to all you great people. Thanks Cowboyz for taking care of all the benchmark stuff. Hope that lasts forever!

BTW - Turns out the overheating problem with my car was due to all the mud in the radiator overheating it and boiling away all my coolant. A refill and a few dollars worth of hi-pressure rinse at the local carwash seems to have done the trick. Thanks Cowboyz, MoabMan and WRITE SHOP ROBERT for all your help with that. I may need to see Moab Man about getting a few extra inches of lift on the subie. And some lockers, maybe.

Thanks to Mockba for letting me be on his team for the Amazing Race...I truly enjoyed myself with that one, and am getting quite good with my little slingshot...maybe I will have a "no-talent" for next year, too.

Enjoyed driving up to Monument Peak with Shaker for my third highpoint this year. Not as hard as most, but a great trip nonetheless.

Just FYI, for many reasons I do plan on moving this event up a couple weeks next year, and possibly/probably in the years after that. This will miss the opening of the bowhunt, which will mean less traffic, I think, as well as possibly warmer weather (maybe). Additionally, it will mean that the kids won't already be back in school, which I think will give parents more flexibility. Additionally, the Potter's Ponds cache logbook indicates that the cache actually was placed on August 12, 2000, not the August 27 date indicated on GC.com, so this will be more in keeping with tradition, anyway, not that I am a stickler for that anyway. Other than that, I am not sure how this could have been better, although I think I very well might invest in a bullhorn just for this cause.

    Cache on! bd

  • And now a word from our sponsor: It was another great geo-event...at least that is what I've been told MANY times by those who came. I was busy being host and making sure everyone felt welcome and had what they needed. I was glad that so many people were able to come and enjoy the evening. There were about 35 people, in all. I think you'll have to take my word for it, because I didn't notice anyone taking pictures.

I was so busy all evening that I didn't take time to write down numbers from the travel bugs that came to visit. Can you believe that? I did get the numbers for a few coins though.

I also have to apologize to everyone who came expecting ice cream with their dessert. I had it. It's still in the freezer. I just got so busy last night that it complete slipped my mind to bring it out. At least the cake and cherry pie were great with out it, but would have been that much better had I remembered it. Again, sorry, guys.

I don't think any of those who were able to stay for the fireworks were disappointed. There were a lot of them, and some of them were even worth watching, for legal fireworks, that is. The kids really had a good time.

Thanks again, scubadog, for the very thoughtful gift of the book on Burma Shave signs. It has really been fun to read though it and see all the clever Burma Shave poetry.

Thanks to everyone who came and made it a great event for all. We really DO need more of these little get-togethers.

    --SirGerald and LadyLeAnn

  • Scout Master's photo from the event.
  • Redwing_dave's photos from the event.
  • And now a word from our sponsor: A splendid day in the Wasatch from beginning to end. It was a warm, sunny, and slightly breezy day on the Great Western Trail as eleven of us took to the trail to gather some trash, renew or make new acquaintances, and conquer Grandview Peak. We accomplished all we set out to and had a lot of fun doing it.

The crew included UtahJean (who set a record for consecutive trips to GVP in white Reeboks AND survived a nasty tumble to boot); Scoutmaster (who couldn't help but show off his swell olive drab and red, officially-licensed, calf hugging BSA hiking socks); Bunkerdave (aka: "The World's Tallest Geocacher", and newly-annointed member of the "1,000 Club"); Black Mage (brother of Red Mage and making his maiden trek to GVP); Cachunuts (aka "Rubicon Brother-blue"; "The Victim"; "Beer Swiller"; and a host of other nicknames I can't seem to recall right now...); ShakerSLC (who proved to one and all that lawyers really can be nice guys--and good hikers!); 39Geezer (our resident Wasatch-100 veteran and Dilbert distributor); roadstr (who, judging by the energy he hikes with, must be lying through his teeth about being a pack-a-day guy); Kimbest (winner of the "Ugly Tie Contest" and now working toward 2000 caches found!); RedwingDave (who also scaled GVP for his first time), and yours truly, who celebrated and shared my 30-year anniversary of my first trip to GVP with a fine band of folks.

We started the expedition by driving up Skyline Drive to connect with the Great Western Trailhead at the head of Holbrooke Canyon. We made our way to "MoDaSa", placed a new cache near "The Church", hit "Snag Rock" and then "Grandview 2002", before scaling Grandview Peak, eating lunch and enjoying the view.

Upon reaching the summit, I followed hallowed tradition and broke out the sardines (in tomato sauce), and those present who salivated at the thought of devouring those smoked Norwegian guppies had their wildest culinary dreams come true. 39Geezer in particular was unable to resist seconds, and perhaps thirds, all the while dipping his high-carb pretzels in the tangy tinned sauce.

After lunch and a flurry of picture-taking, we descended and headed back to where we started. UJ, stalwart that she is, got a close-up view of the trail that neither she nor the rest of the group planned on. No problem, though. Jean just brushed herself off and continued the hike, undaunted.

Upon arriving at the trailhead, Shaker SLC and me encountered the hellish roar of two motorized 4-wheelers, operated by two individuals who seemed hell-bent on kicking up as much dust and spewing forth copious amounts of dirt and gravel in the wake of their wild turns as man and machine can possibly muster. Ah, civilization! We also learned of the trials and tribulations of one unfortunate soul who inexplicably chose to forgoe the warning sign two miles north about 4WD vehicles ONLY beyond that particular point. It was an exercise in futility to attempt some measure of lucid understanding of the thought process that individual seemed to lack. He was stuck, seemingly beyond all hope of recovery, on a rough track trail meant only for hikers, horses and Jeeps. He was driving a Chevy S10 2WD low-rider pickup. The guy finally liberated his vehicle and then demonstrated the "eject-a-shell" feature on the bed of his truck while tearing up the hill like a bat out of hell.

Anyway, the best was yet to come as we were greeted at the parking area by AimHigh!, NekoMama, and family. They surprised us with cold drinks, homemade salad, cookies and an array of lawn chairs. Thanks, guys!

What a day! This one was a keeper. Thanks to everyone with the help gathering litter. Summer was made for days like this! Cache-u-later...

  • And now a word from our sponsor: Thanks everyone whom came to this great event. We couldn't have done it without you!

It was Stalkur, mine, and Riddick (the dog)'s pleasure to be able to host a successful event.

Yes, we were a bit disappointed some had to leave early, but I'm totally understanding about needing an opportunity to pick up a few more caches - especially while you're in the Magna area since most of y'all don't get out this way. I hope you guys had some fun with all the ones concentrated around Magna.

Weather overall did co-operate - not too hot, and with the pavillian and playground in the shade other than for about 10 minutes, I think this worked out perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day!

I think the Raffle went over well - thanks for the last minute donation of the geocoin - it was a lovely addition, and definately made the Crimson Crew happy! I hope the winners do enjoy the prizes, and perhaps next time I'll do a few more ready made caches since this seemed to go over well and encourage more geocaching. I'm also thinking that maybe I can hide a few around the event area that we can play games with for prizes - I just didn't have time to set this up today.

On a side note, LyonsDen, I hope that we can avoid the Russian Olive Tree... ;-)... I don't particularly like them.

Thanks to everyone whom brought the travelbugs - I can't believe we had 3 white jeeps in 1 place! What a HIT! Yes, I have pictures to prove it! (See the pictures)

DaMenace, brownbag, and Grandpa Kim, thanks much for the pointers on finding caches, and Sir Gerald/Lady Leann for bringing all of his coins and examples of signature items. They have added to my ideas for my own signature items.

KimBest, I totally appreciate your bringing all the silverwear and everything - that was so kind of you!

HarborPilot's wife, I do hope you can get with HarborPilot and bring them to the next event.

Viggin - I'm glad you could make it - I hope you were able to pick up some tips - let us know if you need any help or want to get together and find some caches!

I know I'm missing a bunch of people whom also attended, but thanks to all of you as well for bringing food and joining us.

  • And now a word from our sponsor: Thanks to everyone who came. It was a great event and we picked up about 8 bags of trash, an old tire, some Styrofoam sheets, and an old board within a 1/4 mile section of the trail. You wouldn't think we would have found that much.

Other then those of my family, there were 2 Utah County Cachers, and 3 from Salt Lake County. (Not that it matters where you came from, but I'm glad you guys all came).

I always like meeting new cachers. Today I met Malum, and Mr and Mrs Trynyti at the event. It was also good to talk to w/ My Dog, Dorkteam6 (Bro 2), KimBest, and PeanutsParents again.

Thanks everyone for helping out and making this part of the provo river trail and much cleaner place.

  • Photo Gallery:

  • Redwing_dave's photo from the event.
  • 5 volts' photo from the event.
  • And now a word from our sponsor: Glad to see such a great group of cachers this morning. We managed to find every cache listed on the south leg, and I was even able to solve the Puzzle for ark-pay ay-way uzzle-pay thanks to a hint from the owner and ScoobaDog. The group had dwindled for the north leg, and as sore as my butt was we only made it as far as Perpetual Geocache, 4 caches short of the entire ride. Got back to my truck at 6 p.m. Probably would have made a lot better time in the morning if not for 15 to 20 mph headwinds.
Really glad to see those I know, and meet those I didn't. Events like this continually prove what an awesome group of cachers we have in and around Utah. I could go on, but I have a few caches to log, then get packed for a business trip to New York early, early in the morning.
Thank you all for attending and making this event so great!

  • And now a word from our sponsor: Thanks everybody for coming, and for pitching in some food, drinks, and firewood. What a turnout! It was a great pleasure to meet the old caching friends, and even more fun to meet the cachers who I only knew from their logs.

We absolutely enjoyed reading your logs, thanks! A few assorted comments:

Scubadog - special thanks for joining the party, I think I owe you some hides along W Uinta trails now

Cach-U - you didn't pack the metal detector this time, did you? It was a great and bold expedition across the creek to Ratz Trap, but it would have been even better to find it, right ?

eBarry - what a cool story about the ring not fitting in the Prince of Wales container ! Also - isn't a GPSr just useful sometimes? Just yesterday I was leading a group of skiers through the cliffbands of Shingle Creek divide, in the dense falling snow, and the ability to navigate by satellites was just incredibly helpful.

UJ - just don't forget to don a white chef's hat next time when you throw a steak on a grill, and it should come out just perfect Actually the kudos for saving the steaks go to '39Geezer who restarted the grill with the real coals straight out of the campfire!

DHob - sorry about that chocolate cake! We've been pondering the Cake Question with the girls just before the party, but we just wouldn't guess how many people will join!

Utah Geocaching - grow strong, bright, healthy, and kind in 2005! We wish everybody a great year of adventures discovering Utah, one cache at a time.

Thanks Jean for allowing us to invade your home and have the opportunity to relax together, share stories, meet some new cachers, and of course getting some great food to chow down on. It's always a pleasure to get together with cachers and just have a great time. Thanks again to everyone.

    -- Thorn Cachers

We had a decent turn-out and as always, it is nice to get together with other geocachers. We noted that Kimbest sure had wet feet when he arrived. We appreciate it when we get someone from other parts of Utah to our events. We dropped off Kippers T.B. and the Tooter Scooter T.B. and took a T.B. that looks like a pony express rider since we are makin a trip to Montana in March.
